Celeste attacks Rhodes pledge during fair tour
Ohio Lt. Gov. Richard Celeste, challenger to Gov. James A. Rhodes, challenged Rhodes pledge of no new taxes as unreal. At the Ohio State Fair Celeste cited past tax hikes while noting Rhodes backed sales tax increases in the 1960s and a 1975 economic package. He advocated restraint but left open whether he would pledge no new taxes. Celeste, campaigning at cattle halls, emphasized visiting county fairs to connect with voters while fair rules limit overt politicking.
