Ore Carving May Be Norse Rune Stone
MASSILLON Ohio AP an iron ore carving on display since 1905 as an Ohio Indian artifact may be a Norse rune stone from 12th century Viking explorers or settlers. The four inch high object shows a woman's face and may have marked a grave. Found in Plain Township Stark County the piece came to Massillon library in 1905 from Dr Abraham Pease who bought it in 1880. Dr Clyde Keeler of Central State Hospital Milledgeville Ga raised the rune stone possibility in a letter to the museum. He has pursued the idea since reading a 1880 Pease letter describing it as a specimen of aboriginal art. The top inscription in runic characters is interpreted as dating Sept 12 1154. If genuine it would be one of two Viking picture art pieces in North America. Other rune stones found here bear runic writing without pictures. Two Viking age objects were found in northern Newfoundland but no authentic Viking works farther south. At Keeler’s suggestion the stone was placed in a bank vault after a prior runic find in Ross County was stolen.
