Passengers from a car train collision at the Franklin Madison Road crossing jammed the Middletown Hospital lobby. One dead, 111 affected including a 4 year old, as relatives and bystanders waited for examinations and X rays.
Six Air Force reservists were killed when a C119 Flying Boxcar crashed during a routine training flight near Wilmington Ohio. Twenty one reservists and four crew survived as the plane crash landed in a pasture after takeoff from Clinton County Air Force Base bound for Otis Air Force Base Massachusetts. An investigation will determine power loss causes as witnesses describe the craft losing power and turning back toward the base before going down in a flames. Names of the dead and injured were withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Senator George S. McGovern announces an active bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. He holds 26 pledged delegates from South Dakota and aims to rally uncommitted delegates after Kennedy’s assassination. McGovern plans to seek re election to the Senate while using his name to unite Kennedy supporters.
A Piedmont Airlines flight with 37 aboard crashed on approach to Charleston WV amid fog. Initial reports say 32 killed with five survivors in critical condition. The twin engine plane originated in Louisville and stopped in Cincinnati before Charleston.
Biafra said it repelled a three-pronged Nigerian attack in a sector east of Port Harcourt near Opobo. The secessionist radio asserted Nigerian troops moved on Opobo, while federal sources said they were holding their ground against counterattacks.
Racial violence that killed three and wounded 18 subsided as heavy rain and an all-night curfew kept Miami's Negro districts quiet. National Guard and police enforced curfew while streets, looting debris, and shuttered bars and theaters reflected the city’s tense mood.
National Guardsmen and police patrolled central Little Rock after a memorial service for Cecil Ingram Jr. ended in violence. One Black man wounded, a policeman injured, 22 arrested as gunfire and arson plagued the East Side.
The cold front moved from central Lake Erie toward the south evening, likely reaching the Ohio River tonight. Scattered showers and thunderstorms in advance of the cool air will end after the front passes. Tomorrow should be cooler and less humid with lows in the 60s and a high near 80.
