River patrols in Vietnamese waters help Allied forces capture or destroy large amounts of enemy supplies. During the Saigon offensive the Viet Cong moved ammunition food and troops by sampan to remote areas around Saigon. A regular river patrol formed in 1966 to stem infiltrators into Allied sectors.
A Baltimore and Ohio passenger train derailed after a station wagon struck its rear at the Franklin Madison Road crossing three miles north of Middletown. Elbert Lee Wels Jr., 17, of 7105 Franklin Madison Road, died on arrival at Middletown Hospital. about 25 others were treated there. Authorities reported 128 passengers on board with extensive rescue and ambulance response from multiple counties.
President Johnson undergoes additional medical tests at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio to gauge diverticulosis. His condition described as diverticulosis with no inflammation, with possible surgery not yet determined. Mrs Johnson also receiving tests, and Johnson to return for more exams after a 48 hour liquid diet.
Ohio delegates begin leaving the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach unhappy with Spiro Agnew's nomination but pledge support for the Nixon Agnew ticket. Rep. Minshall criticizes the pick while Rhodes denies interest in the vice presidency.

In Pittsburg Kansas five skunks trapped in a shed required a joint effort by a police officer, an animal control officer and the fire department. Tear gas angered the animals, ventilation spread fumes, residents fled, and the skunks were finally captured. Cleanup included washing clothing and vehicle, with fans decontaminating the building.
In Miami Liberty City and surrounding districts saw three Negroes killed and many wounded as rioting flared. National Guard and police imposed a 6 pm curfew, swept streets, and arrested 148 amid looting and gunfire. authorities vowed to keep order with force if needed.
