No ground fighting reported between Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the Polis Xeros stretch. The Soviet Union warned Turkey against widening the war as Turkish air activity continued for a fourth day. AP witness Alex Efty described American F104 jets above Polis while residents took cover in the square amid discussions of the crisis.
NATO disclosed Turkey will pull some air force units from the alliance to use in its national interest. The move is described as permissible under the NATO treaty as discussions over Cyprus crisis continue. The US Britain and other members urge a settlement to prevent a Turkey Greece breach on NATO’s eastern flank. The alliance summoned its permanent council for a third Cyprus session in six days.
The C130 evacuated 35 American dependents and embassy staff to Beirut from Nicosia. Ambassador Taylor Belcher's wife and two teenage sons were among them. State Department ordered the evacuation. In Athens, Greek Foreign Minister Costopoulos warned Turkey over Cyprus actions.
Costopoulos told the Turkish envoy that Greece believes the Polis strike occurred because not all Turkish forces have orders for a cease-fire. Greek charges accuse Turkish forces of slipping ashore near Kokkinina, a fishing village 20 miles west of Polis, to aid beleaguered Turkish Cypriots.
