Eight U.S. zoos linked to contraband reptiles smuggling
A federal prosecutor said eight major zoos including National Zoo Washington and Philadelphia Zoo received more than 600 rare reptiles as part of an international smuggling ring. Twelve people were indicted after a 2 1/2 year probe spanning the United States, France, Switzerland, Africa and Australia.

Endangered species reptile smuggling indicted in U S cases
A grand jury charged 12 people with illegally importing endangered reptiles including Fiji iguanas Australian pythons and Taipan snakes in a case tied to the Endangered Species Act. U S Customs officials said hundreds of reptiles were smuggled in 1974 with 300 dying, while zoo officials defended their purchases as legal at the time.
