The American Civil Liberties Union filed a federal suit alleging that 15 women prisoners at the 134 year old Ohio Penitentiary face filthy cells with inadequate cleaning supplies and supplies, vermin, birds in the cellblock, no hot water, cramped toilets, limited washing facilities, poor ventilation, infrequent showers, restricted exercise, no privacy with male guards present, and a fire risk from solitary confinement. The suit seeks transfer to other institutions pending trial and an injunction against further Marysville inmates’ incarceration at the facility.
President Carter moved to curb inflation by directing the Council on Wage and Price Stability to study steel pricing and costs.
