House Fire Destroys Part Of Elk Creek Road Home

An Elk Creek Road family returned from a Smoky Mountains trip to find smoke filling their house. Firefighters fought the blaze until 10 p.m. with six trucks. The two upstairs bedrooms and roof were gutted and the home sustained severe heat and smoke damage. The Brewers, who remodeled the house three years ago, planned to assess losses and find temporary lodging for their family of six.

Ohio Bell workers in Columbus reach tentative pay deal

In Columbus the IBEW struck Western Electric at 12:01 a.m. but 500000 CWA workers nationally and 22,000 Ohio Bell staff were set to strike at midnight. A tentative Bell System settlement, with pensions health care and union security improvements, reduced tensions as pickets dispersed.

Bell Telephone workers strike despite tentative contract

Union members at Western Electric plants nationwide walk out amid a tentative Bell contract with CWA. IBEW reports 15 plants struck with estimates from 57,000 to 80,000 workers. Local negotiations proceed with a midnight August 11 deadline before potential nationwide or individual company strikes.
