Young Sergeant More Worried About Overdue Baby
Bayonets, mud and Mekong paddies frame the day as 26 year old sergeant Edwin Williams of C Company 2nd Battalion 39th Infantry awaits news of his overdue baby the same day his unit fights near a thatch farmhouse. He jokes about beer bets and a birthday toast. The 9th Division men endure 18 hours of combat with a 1500 round barrage and dawn sweep finding 32 enemy bodies. Williams, a six year veteran from Somerset Pennsylvania, values his men and rejects a field commission to stay with his unit.
