East Liverpool Ohio juvenile court imposes penalties on a 15 and 16 year old for burning an American flag. The girls must run newspaper ads apologizing to the country, attend daily flag ceremonies, observe a six month curfew, and avoid contact for a year.
Steven Smith, a 12 year old blind student from Oak Avenue, earns a guiding dog named Traver through Pilot Dogs training in Columbus. The Labrador retriever is trained to find doors and follow commands. Smith plans to live in a dorm at Ohio State University with Traver as his roommate and pursue psychology or political science.
The House approved a revised 25 billion education bill 328 to 83 after ending antibusing efforts. The measure lets courts order busing to protect minority students and deletes a reopener provision, with funds for two to four years.
