Residents on Saigon streets expect the National Liberation Front to seize control after American bombing campaign targeting the city. Observers say the political shift appears imminent as U S forces reduce influence.
State Department said 1,095 Americans remained in South Vietnam at the last count, down from 1,357. The breakdown includes 143 civilian Defense Department staff, 162 military, 150 contractors, 497 other government employees, and 143 non-government workers. Defense says about 500 Army personnel will go to Guam to help refugees, with no combat units. Senate Leader Mansfield voices mixed feelings on resettlement.
In Washington the union sponsored Rally For Jobs Now drew about 45 000 people to RFK Stadium to urge government action to cut unemployment. Halfway through speakers were interrupted as crowds flooded aisles chanting We want jobs and pressed toward the field, resisting police attempts to seat them.
A Garfield Street resident, 39 year old Robert P. Hardin, was killed when the pickup left U S 42 north of the Greene County line and struck a bridge abutment. The driver Cletis Martin, 44, was hospitalized and the crash remains under investigation. Hardin’s body was sent to Mercy Medical Center in Springfield. No charges were filed.
The forecast calls for a sunny day with highs in the low 70s. Monday brings a few clouds but temperatures stay in the 70s. Tonight’s low will dip to the upper 40s.
Viet Cong gunners fired four Soviet made rockets into central Saigon before dawn. Six people died and 22 were injured as houses burned and Majestic Hotel suffered minor damage. The attack, amid Viet Cong pressure and talks of a new neutralist leadership, followed reports Huong may resign for General Minh to take over.
Irina McClellan a 35 year old Soviet citizen and her 40 year old American husband mark their first wedding anniversary apart by official Soviet order. Woodford McClellan a UVA professor has been refused permission to visit his wife despite promises. Her attempt to join him in America was rejected again last month. The couple had hoped for a smooth visa exit but officials gave no reason for the denial.
A computer developed from years of research is slated to begin monitoring and operating the Miami Conservancy District regional sewage treatment plant at Franklin next month. Eric von Klinger reports on page 51.
