Ohio towns vanish from state landscape since 1930
Ohio communities once housed over 10 percent of the population in 1930, but by 1970 many small towns and villages had disappeared. Rural sociologist William F Flinn of Ohio State University notes about 55 communities vanished in the four decades before 1970, leaving gone are communities.

Quiet Ohio towns fade as population shifts leave small communities dying
Flinn notes 1930 to 1970 shifts reduced 532 of Ohio's small towns to aging structures. From Scaggsville to Bertha's Furnace, Walker's Cliff and Blackhand, many once thriving places dwindled as rail lines abandoned and jobs moved to cities. About 3.9 percent of Ohioans lived in areas labeled forgotten minorities by 1970. The Census Bureau omits named listings for tiny urban and rural spots.
