City Faces Record Bond Interest Rate Hit
City officials opened bids on a 323000 municipal bond issue at five and one eighth percent, the highest rate for tax free bonds. Finance Director Harry E. Newlin warned wage controls may be needed as rates rise, noting this is the highest seen in his 21 years. The sale involved six bidders with premiums totaling several thousand dollars, all to be repaid by local property owners through assessments funding curb, street, and water line improvements.
