AP reports leader Joseph A. Beirne foresees an imminent settlement to the week old strike affecting about 165000 Communications Workers. Informal Bell System talks proceed while Beirne allows strikers to aid tornado relief in Kentucky.

Tornadoes killed 11 people across Kentucky and Ohio with many injured and hundreds displaced. Five deaths were in Falmouth Kentucky and five in Wheelersburg Ohio, while two deaths occurred near Cincinnati. Damages ran into millions as homes and businesses were leveled or damaged.
