Temperance and the Deep Question of Self Control

The author argues that total abstinence remains healthful but admits a decline in church adherence. He recalls a labor leader who felt healthier after three months on the water wagon and stresses that self control, guided by the spirit of God, is the core of temperance rather than fanaticism or social pressure. He rejects Pharisaic stance while affirming personal integrity in choosing abstinence.
