Washington AP reports John M. Pinney, 34, named first director of HEW s new Office on Smoking and Health by Secretary Joseph A. Califano Jr Pinney previously led programs against alcoholism in nine cities under a 2 8 million federal grant He will oversee seed money for research pilot programs and new anti smoking materials and the office will be based in Washington with ties to the Atlanta clearinghouse.
