State trooper Thomas P. Hammer 33 was shot in the abdomen during a confrontation with William Copeland 18 of Orangeburg South Carolina after stopping a motorist on U S 35. Copeland died in a collision with a tractor trailer near the Jackson city limits. Hammer remained in intensive care at Holzer Medical Center in fair condition after surgery.
