In Beirut Lebanon youths fired from rooftops and barricades as bombs struck stores and homes. The fighting between the Phalange party and Palestinian guerrillas intensified with more groups joining the conflict.
Moscow radio said Alexander N. Shelepin has been relieved from his Politburo duties at his own request. The 25th Soviet Communist party congress was set for February 24, 1976. Meanwhile in Beirut the dead rose above 100 as fighting continued after a mediation attempt by Arab League head Mahmoud Riad. The Phalangists handed over two private army members blamed for bus shootings. volleys and explosions persisted as both sides claimed targeting civilians and party guards.
Cloudy skies with lows in the mid-40s expected tonight in the Middletown area. Showers possible, with Thursday highs in the mid-60s. The extended outlook shows a chance of showers, then clearing by Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Khmer Rouge forces shell central Phnom Penh and push toward the city airfield while government troops contest the outskirts. In Saigon area, Xuan Loc holds amid retreats. Phan Rang radios fail, and Dau Giay on Highway 1 falls as both sides suffer casualties.
Senate committee tentatively backs a $200 million fund to assist in evacuating Americans from South Vietnam and provide humanitarian aid. Officials note American departures are underway with 3,850 remaining, down from over 6,000 last week, and a goal to reach about 1,000 in two weeks.
The Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional for states to set different ages of majority for men and women in child support terms, undermining laws that allow women to marry without parental consent at younger ages. Justice Blackmun noted no unquestioned truth in earlier maturity claims, with about 35 states cited by the Women's Law Project.
Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes reports major holdings in Wendy's International and Jackson Iron and Steel Co. He lists five income sources totaling over $500 for 1974, including Rhodes and Associates and H and R Development. Lt. Gov. Celeste notes salaries from National Housing Corp and the House, stock sales to Frank Celeste, and a 20 percent National Housing stake with Lake Shore Towers property in Lakewood.
