Detroit AP report says a stamp vending machine installed in May 1956 began shortchanging customers by a penny and thanking itself on tape. Clerks noticed excess politeness, voiced by the machine, and it was turned off and boxed. Milwaukee factory asked for parts to repair it.
Prison officers fire on five escapees during a wall breakout at the Washington State Prison in Walla Walla. Two inmates are wounded, one fatally slowed, while three flee. two additional convicts remain at large as guards search the grounds. Jessie L. Davis 40 and Roland Beard — both in custody for robbery — are among those involved. Olson 24 is shot, Nichols 28 and Herr 21 are unaccounted for.
