Dag Hammarskjold reported to the Security Council that Israel and Egypt have agreed to refrain from hostile acts except in self defense. The pledges followed an Egyptian jet being shot down by Israeli aircraft amid ongoing crisis.
State patrol reports one of four escapees apprehended after an all night hunt. Bloodhounds aided searches across Meigs and Jackson counties near Pomeroy. Sublett of Boone County Virginia identified as the captured suspect. others named as Perrytt of Athens Bruge of Oak Hill and Buster New of Thurman remain at large.
An Egyptian military jet was shot down in Israeli territory after a battle between four Egyptian and two Israeli planes. Sixteen Israelis and Arabs were killed or wounded in the night raids as commando fighters attacked Israeli towns. U.N. Ham marskjold and Egyptian officials met in Cairo while U.S. Ambassador Lawson praised Israeli restraint. Egyptians press hailed the Fedayeen raids as heroes amid calls for retaliation.
State highway patrol identified Edgar Dukes, 59, and Ina Dukes, 53, as the Michigan couple killed when a steel coil fell from a truck on U S 25 near Cridersville. Two coils dropped from the load. one eight thousand pounds struck the car, killing the driver instantly and her husband minutes later. The truck driver, William W Richards of Dayton, said the load shifted when wheels left the road.
Twenty four Negro children denied admission to Webster Washington Elementary in Hillsboro moved into Principal Haro Henry's office to stay until they are allowed in. U S District Judge John H Druffel orders immediate integration. The Hillsboro school board plans to comply after placing the children in appropriate grades via placement tests. Columbus education officials will send two representatives to administer examinations Friday. Some Negro children already attend Webster Washington. the others face reattendance in adjusted grades.
Ohio Liquor Director William C. Bryant will sign the first new hard liquor permit today. The Stouffer Corp of Fairview Park in Cuyahoga County tops the list as first in line after the March Supreme Court decision lifting a seven year freeze. The court refused to review, opening possible appeal to the U S Supreme Court. The department will now update population figures for Ohio's 1,030 permit areas using current data.
A 28,000 Berthe Morisot painting Jour d Ete vanished from the Tate Gallery in London between 10 and 11 am. The work, 17 by 29 inches, was part of Sir Hugh Lane's bequest linked to a Dublin gallery dispute that has simmered since 1915 when Lane died aboard the Lusitania.
Dayton Ohio sheriff deputies seized about 20 zip guns from youths aged 14 to 16. Chief Deputy Pfaul called the toy like weapons as deadly as regular guns. About 30 youths were questioned and released to parents as deputies described a zip gun epidemic.

Columbus Ohio The state liquor department hires Dr Alfred N Watson to conduct a 1956 population census of Ohio to determine hard liquor permit quotas. Watson will be paid $150 per day and works with Management Associates of Columbus. Governor Lausche directs state departments to cooperate as figures will set quotas in wet areas based on current population.
Ponca City police investigated a reported fight and noted no serious injury. An officer described the incident as a man attempting to put his two kids to bed amid a disturbance, with no lasting harm reported.

Chief Justice Carl V. Weygandt signs Fifth District Judge Charles W. Montgomery to sit on the panel for the Dr. Samuel H. Sheppard appeal while Weygandt steps aside due to his son Richard Weygandt’s involvement as Bay Village solicitor in the murder case. Sheppard remains serving life for the 1954 second degree murder of Marilyn Sheppard in Bay Village near Cleveland.
