Tornadic winds struck along the southeast coast of Florida affecting West Hollywood and Dania near Miami. A tornado damaged the Jai Alai Fronton and a drive-in theater. Heavy rain fell across Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina with up to 2 inches in six hours, while the Pacific coast saw light rain and higher elevation snow.
Mrs. Madge Hunter aged 83 widow died Tuesday night from burns when her clothing was set aflame by flames from an open gas stove in Zanesville Ohio.
Dag Hammarskjold met Egyptian Premier Gamal Abdel Nasser for 75 minutes in Cairo as UN seeks to ease Israel Arab tensions. Reports say two minor Arab saboteur attacks occurred, with both sides trading blame for border clashes. Hammarskjold planned further talks with regional leaders while Israel doubts success of the mission.
Two people died when a passenger train and a gasoline truck collided at a crossing in Fort Green Florida. N G Adams and Clifford Ledger burned to death. Conductor L A Kolsterman and porter William J Crosley were burned and hospitalized. one passenger from Hampton Ona Fla suffered minor burns. A Bartow air base pilot reported the crash from the air.
In Chicago during Illinois primary voting two election officials died and another collapsed. Morris Zeitman aged 65 died of an apparent heart attack in front of a polling place while Anthony Mueller aged 58 died while inspecting a voting machine. Matthew Gorzynski aged 70 collapsed in a ballot supply vault at the board of elections headquarters. Hospital attendants cited a gastric attack.
Washington officials discounted any immediate request for Congress to authorize U.S. armed forces in the Middle East unless the Israel Arab conflict worsens. Officials stressed diplomacy to avert crisis and support UN peace efforts led by Dag Hammarskjold.
16 youngsters aged 13 to 18 from Butler Warren Clinton and Fayette counties showcased nearly 75 exhibits at the Manchester Hotel to win district Science Awards. A closed court of inquiry led by Gen. Randolph Pate considered action against drill sergeant Matthew McKeon who ordered the march. McKeon defended the act as discipline while Pate called the trek unauthorized and deplorable. Survivors recalled an hour of horror as comrades fell into a mucky tidal stream near the base. McKeon said he saved several recruits and expressed grief. The investigation aims to determine if Marine Corps procedure suffices without congressional inquiry. The note from Thomas to his sister hinted at hellish conditions on the island and his mother Alma Coughlin marked a poignant birthday record.
Six Texan men were killed when their small aircraft crashed into the slopes of an extinct volcano about 25 miles northwest of Jalapa Mexico Tuesday night. Police identified five of the six as Ray Watson of Levelland Paul Lawrence of Big Spring Morris Davis of Lubbock Charles C. Coffee of Lubbock and Quinn Henry of Lubbock the pilot. The sixth man was not definitively identified but Arthur Chase of Lubbock was to be co-pilot. The group was part of a two‑plane fishing party of 11 middle‑aged businessmen.
United Nations Command charged North Korean Communists with a wanton attack on a U N Command sentry post inside the Korean truce line. The strike occurred Tuesday six miles north of Chorwon.
President Eisenhower leads Adlai Stevenson in Illinois presidential preference returns from the Chicago area. Kefauver write ins lag behind. Eisenhower gains downstate while Stevenson dominates Chicago. Delegates and downstate results shape the Republican and Democratic nominating landscapes.
Alaska crash report details two separate air disasters 200 miles apart in the central coastal highlands. Seven men died and an eighth was seriously injured as search planes located the wreckage near Cordova and on the Kenai Peninsula. Occupants included Bruce Robertson of Seattle and pilot John Wade of Anchorage among others.
