Unemployment Rate Edges Up in March Amid Black Youth Jobs Gap

Overall unemployment rose to 6.2 percent in March from 6.1 in February as job gains slowed. Black teens saw the rate climb to 39 percent, with blacks aged 16 to 19 rising from 38 to 39 percent. Adult men at 4.5 percent and adult women at 11.4 percent remained steady. Total employment rose to 93.3 million, while the labor force reached 99.4 million. The coal strike ended March 26 with little impact on unemployment elsewhere. Wholesale prices also climbed 0.6 percent in March, signaling potential annual inflation near 7 percent if trends continue.

Confessed Virginia killer faces life term for Norford murder

Allen Leroy Anderson, 34, Austin Minnesota native, confessed to eight murders in a summer 1976 cross country spree. In Albemarle County he received a third life sentence for the Aug. 24, 1976, Bell's Store killing of Stony Point storekeeper James Norford Jr. He cited a lack of remorse and blamed rejection and societal attitudes toward homosexuals for his rampage. He also faces a death sentence in Florida for another killing and plans to plead guilty in additional courts.
