The Associated Press reports deadly floods race through Appalachia forcing thousands from their homes as residents stack sandbag levees to hold back rising creeks and rivers. The disaster toll stands at 32 lives so far with crews assessing damage across the region.
Residents recall the swift flood that washed through Matewan West Virginia. Boats rescued the stranded while a coal company helicopter helped save others. The town's bridge medical center bank and schools flooded leaving many asking if rebuilding is possible.
A massive wind and rain storm moving from the Gulf states into the Northeast caused extensive flooding and fatalities. Alabama reported 23 dead, Kentucky five, with West Virginia and Virginia each at two. Flooding overwhelmed Barbourville and Knox County, while Tennessee towns faced dike breaches and evacuations. Christian militiamen and Palestinian guerrillas fought seesaw battles on southern Lebanon hills near the Israeli border. The clash centered on Taibe and Rub Tallateen as the Palestinian counteroffensive sought to reclaim bases from which raids into Israel were launched.
