As flights depart Tan Son Nhut airport investigators search wreckage of a C5A Galaxy crash killing 243 orphans aboard. The tragedy ranks as the second worst air disaster, with survivors and anxious adoptive parents awaiting word.
President Chiang Kai-shek, last of World War II Allied Big Four, died of a heart attack at 11:50 p.m. He called in his will for troops to recapture the mainland from the Communists. His son Chiang Ching-kuo is expected to hold power, with Madame Chiang as adviser and emissary. The Nationalist government in Taiwan has long pledged to retake China’s mainland under anti Communist aims.
Delegates at the Ohio Education Association assembly condemned keeping schools open during teacher work stoppages and urged legislation granting teachers right to sue before back to work orders. They approved curbs on counting administrative staff in pupil ratios and defended teachers against disrespectful students. E Wade Underwood was re elected president and David C Abbott won the VP post.
Fighting resumed in the Mekong Delta south of Saigon as Communist led forces push deeper. In Saigon, radical and moderate groups condemned Thieu's new premier while urging his resignation. Refugees rose to about 40,000 as U.S. evacuation plans formed and political tensions grew.
The forecast calls for sunny skies today with highs in the mid 50s and overnight lows in the upper 20s. Friday will stay sunny with highs in the low 60s and similar clear conditions expected.
Former Rep. Walter Judd of Minnesota called Chiang Kai-shek one of the century's greatest men and praised his defense against totalitarianism. Anna Chennault recalled Chiang as a leader with conviction and a steadfast ally of the United States in Asia.
At Middletown's unemployment office the daily crowd tests the system as recession hurts families. Ron Hardin, laid off from Armco Steel, collects 113 dollars weekly while fearing bills and car troubles. Others like Mosley, Cochran, and McWhorter share pride, despair, and cautious optimism as they seek aid and future work.
