Court to decide if teacher rights were violated
The Supreme Court agreed to hear whether Bessie Givhan, a Mississippi junior high teacher, was fired for criticizing school policy during desegregation, a case that could define public employee free speech. The dispute followed a 1971 dismissal and an appeals reversal of reinstatement with back pay.
