Governor Hoffman orders a special election for a state Assembly seat in Broome County to fill the vacancy from the death of Hon William M Ely. Harrison Reed of Florida faces impeachment amid accusations of misgovernment and Treasury depletion.

Sullivan County reports a new singing association formed in Monticelo on February 21 with Rev. M Dawson as president and Mrs Taurton Niven as vice president. Tully McLain is treasurer Julia Decker secretary and L B Sweezy conductor. J C Terwilliger of Bloomingburgh sold his store and tin business to Thomas Ghee who will continue the same line.
Sir Edward Thornton said no serious difficulty is expected between the United States and Great Britain over the Washington treaty. He believes the misunderstanding will be satisfactorily adjusted after conversations with a prominent gentleman yesterday in Washington Fes. 14.
Rev Stephen Mor gan, recently convicted of stealing books from the Theorical Library, was tried by a church Council at Caernot. He expressed penitence and was forgiven but severely censured, given a reprimand before his congregation, and ordered to replace the stolen books. His ordination is deferred to probation and he will continue to preach.
The cashier discovers a $590 deficit and a $500 bill missing at closing. A mouse-hole intrusion is later found to have partly drawn the bill from the drawer, suggesting theft. No further large withdrawals occurred that day.
A Newberry Herald item describes a man named Henson living in town who harbors a pot slope for three months. He shows nervous disorder traits yet remains lucid and works daily while physicians treat this odd condition. officials fear insanity or death may follow.
The Crawford Branch marks weeks of operation with a formal opening celebration on Friday Feb 23. The Excelsior Hook and Ladder Company No 1 held its Annual Sociable at Empire Hall on Tuesday evening with invited engineers, trustees, and press members. Music by Wannemaker's Band complemented a festive supper, speeches from foreman Ferris M. Pronk and others, and a lively ball afterwards despite a storm.
A Turkish Chair exhibition at Van Duzer & Lain tempts voters in St Pauls Church fair. The chair will go to the village cler gyman with the most votes, each vote costing ten cents.

Seward defends his writings on denominational topics and accuses Morse of prejudice and misrepresentation. He cites a prior letter and promises to publish further material to counter perceived misstatements.
The Orange County village progresses with a new W C Banks & Bro store nearly ready for occupancy by April. Goodenough & Nichols will operate from the current Banks & Bro premises after April. Erastus Caskey has bought a main street site for a new building, while a blacksmith shop and several dwellings are planned. The Delaware bridge is finished though the double track awaits frost thaw. The bridge toll dispute on the Wallkill river prompts talks of buying or rebuilding the Montgomery village and Walden bridges, with a special town meeting set for March 26 to authorize up to twenty thousand dollars for iron bridges. Rev. Atwater preaches again March 18. public sentiment grows for progress and lower perceived tax burdens.
Sussex County reports a Good Templars festival on Feb 22 with a free temperance lecture at the Presbyterian church. A Lower Lafayette singing school runs 13 weeks. Baptisms following revival, slate quarry work near Lower Lafayette with 15 workers. Local commerce, railroad repairs, and a near-fatal horse accident also noted.
Financial report for the village ending February 1 1872 excluding Education and Water Works. Cash on hand February 1 1871 was 1765 98. Totals received from Street Department and General Fund amount to 22 814 27 including licenses and assessments. Expenditures by order of the board and sewer and street accounts total 18 453 37 with remaining balance 2 265 25.

At a special meeting last Friday James H. Holly and Charles E Tolhurst resigned as 1st Assistant and Secretary respectively. Mrs. B G Palmer and E S Colwell were elected to fill the vacancies. A wagon accident Tuesday left Wm H Case badly injured. A lecture by Miss Lotty Hough on popping the question drew a small crowd despite stormy weather.
A worker named Thornley in the Craigville woolen mills had a severe arm laceration last week after his arm was caught between cords. He received treatment for the wound and was reported in stable condition.
The editor Pride of the Susquehanna Journal says he wants a copy after the Port Jervis Gazette got through with it. The Gazette replies it does not matter to them whether a copy is seen or not. Give him another cut, Mott.
At the annual Royal and Select Mistra assembly in Albany last week John D. Williams of Elmia was elected Grand Master and G Fred Wiltsie of Newburgh was chosen Deputy Grand Master.
The 1863 drafted men anxious to recover $800 will gather for a condolence meeting at Newburgh Court House on Friday in February. The MVA will convene Friday evening at Orchard Street Hall. For sale notices advertise a Wickham Avenue dwelling and a South Street building via S R Corwin & Co.
N Roe sold four year old Hambletonian Florida to A Taylor of Turners. J H Bertholf sold two trotters last week to New York buyers for 1200 and 800. Dexter trotted a mile 27 feet at Buffalo in 2 17 and a mile on Long Island track in 2 16. The latter was not a formal record but was noted in Turf Field and Farm and major papers.
Circleville clergyman Rev. Charles H. Park has received a call to serve as pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Ridgebury, inviting his leadership at the local congregation.
