Judge Raysom Batcom writes from January 16 1872 that he cannot participate in a meeting to indorse President Grant. He argues Republicans back Grant and mocks Cincinnati conspirators while praising Grant as honest and worthy of re election. he predicts broad Democratic support among non office seeking voters.
A law passed at the end of the New Jersey legislature session requires all sellers of ale wine porter or malt liquors in quantities under one quart to obtain a license. The act takes effect July 4 with licenses issued starting Sept 1, after the next Common Pleas term, granting saloons a two month hiatus.
A Patterson Press report details tests on bridges from Hawthorne to Hackensack. Bridges at Erie Hawthorne and Pasaic River bridges showed acceptable deflection under various loads, with plans to replace major structures with iron bridges. A new Saddle River crossing nears completion to reopen travel by Monday the 22.
Mr N Goble has taken the agency of the latest Singer Sewing Machine and opened an office in Morgan and Sloat’s bookstore. J P Hoverman of Slauson Hall promotes Spring and Summer offerings in today's columns. A G and S R Thompson now agents for Star Lightning Rod Company in Middleton. The town diversifies its trades with new agents and products, ending reliance on unreliable temporary providers.
Burglars entered the Howell's depot store occupied by N B Mapes and carried off about 400 dollars worth of muslins prints cassimeres boots shoes teas coffees hams and small items. This is Mapes third break in in three years with only one thief captured.
Personal major Waller completed arrangements for printing an extensive illustrated history of Sullivan County. In town today, N B Beede, Newburgh spice dealer and advertiser, touted his spring trade and endorsed the project.
In Montgomery a meeting of the anti bridgers was held on the 9th inst. They claimed 740000 dollars was represented on their remonstrance which totals more than half the town's taxable property. The protest targets a 20000 dollar tax to build two bridges over the Wallkill. Two turbine wheels weighing a ton each arrived for a new paper mill last week in Montgomery.
Grace Church reports well filled free seats on Sabbath evening. The Young Men's Brotherhood meets Wednesday at 8 o clock sharp. The musical association plans Thursday at 7 o clock. A lively interest grows as the community is urged to learn to sing.
Local residents report people shooting robins and other birds in fields and orchards around the village. The Game Constable has been alerted, but no prosecutions have occurred. The law imposes a twenty five dollar fine on the constable if he fails to prosecute.
E. P. Seward of Florida, aged 73, died suddenly of apoplexy at his home this morning. He was one of Orange County’s oldest respected citizens, father of Dr. F. W. Seward of the village and brother of Hon. Wm. H. Seward.
Due to illness Mr. Geo C. Miller paused his solicitation in the village for the titled book but yesterday began again and is soliciting subscribers for the handsome volume.
At a Wallkill Lyceum meeting on April 18 1872 unanimous resolutions mourn the death of Niel S Townsley of Middletown NY. The tribute praises his faithful service and Christian character and offers deepest sympathies to his mother and relatives. Copies are to be sent to the deceaseds mother and to the Middletown Press.
The Presbyterian Church of Chester reopened for regular services on the Sabbath. Installation of Rev. Mr. Leggett as pastor will be on May 2 at 2 PM. The New York Conference totals 13000 for disabled ministers’ support, widows, and orphans, with allocations to New York district and other towns. Elections for General Conference delegates show Groo winning the informal ballot, Cornell taking a later ballot, with others as reserves and nine pastoral delegates named. The overall count of delegates notes 421 attendees including bishops.
In Monroe Mr. D. W. Howell received a letter from an English agent stating relatives in England left property worth over two million dollars to his family. Martin Konnight plans a 40 by 90 foot stone and slate barn and stables, and rumor says he received about $6,000 from the Erie Railway for fire damage to his dwelling and barn believed caused by a passing engine.
The Newton New Jersey scene is described as decayed with a noon prayer meeting ended and a Y M C A formed as a court session proceeds without indictments. A gambling saloon runs in town and the bearer of bad fortune plans to flee once funds redeem a trunk from the constable.
William M. Sutton of Warwick sold Florida property to James H. Whitney for 1100 dollars. Harrison W. Nanny, Referee, sold 26.5 acres near Amity to Peter Drew for 1845.80 dollars. Sutton sold a Florida lot to Silas McClure for 300 dollars. Jefferson Post sold Florida property to Sutton for 775 dollars.
Data shows temperature variations at North Street Drug Store with recorded times 6 AM 9 AM 12 PM 6 PM 9 PM on April 20. Readings include 60 60 82 40 93.98 and 84.00 in units not specified, with inconclusive letters in the transcription.
