Members of Chi Eta Phi Sorority purchase life memberships in the NAACP as part of the group’s effort in the fight for freedom. Mrs. Juanita Mann serves as basileus of the sorority.
Mrs Lillian Brooks Coffey international supervisor of the Church of God in Christ was honored in Detroit when her life size portrait was unveiled at the Rest Home for retired missionaries in Alden Park. Mrs Albertha McKenzie of Omaha gave the unveiling speech.
Talbot County Grand Jury indicted Francis Berry and Elsie Andrew of the Talbot Citizens Association on four counts for conspiring to keep children from school during the opening day last Sept 5. The case cites efforts to disrupt enrollment intimidate the school board and teachers amid integration in the county with 11 Negro children attending county elementary schools.
Georgia moves to curb the NAACP with a city ordinance requiring disclosure of officers salaries and financial reports. Attorney General Eugene Cook promoted the idea in a state-wide letter, arguing cities can demand data from nonprofits under business license powers.
The national executive board of Chi Eta Phi Sorority convenes in Miami on November 29 and 30 with no local chapter hosting. Business meetings will be at Northwestern High School, led by national business head Mrs Moerell Dickerson from Baltimore, Maryland.
The final paratroopers departed Little Rock on giant C130 aircraft bound for Fort Campbell Kentucky. 225 troops had enforced order at Central High School after integrating the school on September 25 following President orders. Arkansas National Guard retained 900 guardsmen to protect nine African American students as Thanksgiving holiday began.
Earl B. Dickerson was elected to the board of directors at South Side and Trust Co making him the first Black person named to a bank board in Chicago and the first integrated bank board in the United States. Dickerson, an attorney, also leads Supreme Liberty Life Insurance Co. and serves as its president and general manager.
Robert King High, 33, defeats incumbent Randall Christmas in a Miami runoff to become mayor. Shock win by over 8,000 votes attributed to campaign strategy led by ex-Miami Mayor Aronovitz. Henry Arrington signals from Chicago. firm operates in 12 cities plus DC with nearly 600 employees. Miami's only Negro judge John D. Johnson noted.
Pfc. Robert Allen of Nashville Tennessee becomes the first of six Negro Marines tried for the murder of Navy corpsman Adrian R Nobleby in Okinawa. He received a 12 year sentence after a savage head hunting beating. Trials of the remaining five begin before the holidays.
Washington officials announced that Ghanaian envoy Enne Chapman, 48, will represent Ghana in Washington. A native of Keta in the Trans-Volta region, he previously served as a secretary to Prime Minister Kwame Ritenan and held posts in the Ghana Cabinet ANP.
