Mabry a Birmingham Ku Klux Klan officer was sentenced to 20 years the maximum for his role in the mutilation of a Negro handyman. An all white Birmingham jury took less than an hour to decide Mabry's fate. Judge Alaia King called the case the worst he had heard in 85 years. Two other Klansmen received 20-year terms for the Labor Day assault. three more, including two state’s witnesses, face trial with no date set.

Two Killed in Downtown Christmas Shopping Crash
A car plowed into a sidewalk throng near 31 N Miami Ave injuring eight and killing two elderly sisters-in-law. Driver Lester Peckham Frohock, 79, held for manslaughter. nearly blind and intoxicated, he appeared under the influence as the Chrysler coupe struck shoppers just after 10 pm. Victims include Mrs Cleve Metcalfe and her sister-in-law Florence Metcalfe. Among the injured are Louis and Lillian Wolfson and Marie Williams and her three children Ellajean Gerald and Calvin. Frohock had minor injuries.
