Golf Course Ordered Integrated by Federal Judge

Federal Judge Ernett C. Choate ordered the city golf course integrated effective May 10, removing a Monday only segregation rule. The suit, filed Feb 3, 1956 by Dr. E A Ward and others, seeks rights declarations and an injunction. Attorneys were G E Graves and Edwin Davis. The city may appeal to the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans.

Tallahassee Boycott Leader to Speak Tonight in Miami

The Rev. C. K. Steele of Tallahassee, aKey civil rights figure and Inter Civic Council president, will address Miami at 8:00 p.m. Friday May 3 at Greater Bethel AME Church. He helped lead a protest against bus segregation and was jailed along with 10 others. The event kicks off the Miami and Liberty City NAACP branch’s 1957 membership drive with Rev. A. Joseph Reddick presiding.

Grand Jury Urges Reinstatement for Fired Miami Cop

The Miami Police Department veteran Alexander McDowell, fired two weeks earlier, may regain his job after a grand jury report harshly critiquing city officials. The three week Eldredge case inquiry faulted the city attorney, supervisors, and the Civil Service Board, calling one charge the "most outrageously stupid" for a student of commercial law.

Registration drive urged for Negro voters at church

A joint meeting sponsored by the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance Baptist Ministers' Council and the Citizens Committee was held at St. John's Baptist Church to stress the importance of registering and voting. It warned that many citizens are unconcerned about the ballot, which the Constitution grants and powers respect.

Streets Is Indicted For Rape

Charles L. Street, 24, was indicted Tuesday on a rape charge. He was arrested two weeks ago in the northwest home of a white divorcee and is held without bond. Two white patrolmen who answered a neighbor’s call heard the woman scream and caught Streets in the act.
