Teen Shooting Sparks Chicago Race Violence

A 19-year-old White youth admitted firing a shotgun that killed 17-year-old Curtis Bevins as he walked with two friends on a Chicago South Side street. The car fled with two Dreid youths and a 1-year-old girl. Bevins died in hospital. Police say the shooter claimed it was to frighten them after his car was stoned earlier. The case marks a fresh burst of teenage violence in Chicago.

Bill to Close Florida Schools Faces Senate Hurdle

The controversial bill to let public schools be closed instead of integrating White and Negro students is stalled in the Senate Education Committee. Led by Sen. L. K. Edwards, the panel appears set to almost certainly kill the measure, which would empower county boards to close schools as an emergency measure subject to local referendum.

Negro Burglary Convict Sentenced To Electric Chair

A Birmingham Circuit Court jury sentenced 26 year old Charles C. Hamilton to die in the electric chair for first degree burglary. An all white jury deliberated under an hour after Hamilton was found in a white family home last October with gun point, trousers and shoes removed. Hamilton claimed an elderly woman invited him in. Judge Wallace Gibson noted first degree burglary is capital and a lawyer must be provided.

Southern Christians Face Choice Christ or Jim Crow

Nashville Tenn An Episcopal seminary professor urged conference delegates to decide between Christ and Jim Crow saying church people must choose faith over segregation. Dr James K Bernett of Aus- is cited as presenting the argument during the Christian faith and human relations gathering.

Yale man charged with assault linked to 1924 Yale ties

Dr Nelson, with a B D from Yale in 1924, studied at Union Theological Seminary in 1920-21 and at Sorbonne and Protestant Theological in Paris in 1921-22. He then studied at Berlin and Marburg in 1922-23 and spring-summer 1925-26, accused of assaulting a 40-year-old white divorcee in her northwest home. Streets, living at 1929 NW 55th St, surrendered to two white officers after a neighbor reported screams. He entered the house about 5:30 pm under pretense of buying it, and the woman said he attacked her in the living room. A preliminary hearing is set before Peace Justice Hugh DeVal.

Second Annual Christian Calling Conference Held Near Homestead

More than 50 youths attended at Owaissa Bauer Youth Camp near Homestead for the conference. Rev. Robert Johnson gave the keynote on a call to full time service, with Rev. Edward T. Graham closing. Speakers included Rev. Thedford Johnson, Rev. Caxton Doggett, and Mrs. Pauline Dunn among others. Vocations discussed covered ministry, education, missions, church music, and Christian associations. Recreation was led by Paula Williams, Phil Dixon, and Mr. Turner. A Sea Council was formed to unite Greater Miami youth across churches for cooperative planning and fellowship, inviting five teen reps from each Miami church to join the Y Inter-Church Youth Council.
