Market and his efforts to increase the efficiency of personnel and promote good public service were cited during the NCCPT anniversary in Shreveport Louisiana last Sunday. The note appears on page 11 of the issue.
Delray Beach City Commission votes 3-1 against a $60,000 swimming pool for Black residents amid a racial crisis. Vice mayor Catherine Strong opposes. white residents react to the decision. A proposed exclusion act would remove a large portion of the Black population from the city, needing legislative action.
In Jacksonville a 15-year-old boy was shot and killed by petrolman E H Perry and E Miller after a reported burglary. The youth died about 30 minutes later. Police say the boy fled from a darkened house, ignored orders to stop, and was shot when Miller fired toward his legs and then struck him in the back with a .38 slug.
NAACP leaders map a strategy against segregation including lawsuits and education at the 47th annual convention in San Francisco. Highlights include Thurgood Marshall urging federal action, lawsuits in eight states, community negotiation, party platform scrutiny, and a plan to file about 30 new cases this year. In Morehead Kentucky the first two Black students enroll at Morehead State College for the summer session.
Wilberforce University president Dr Charles Leander Hill urged closer cooperation between Negro and Jewish groups in America during centennial commencement exercises. Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver received the Doctor of Laws degree and was praised as an inter faith leader. Hill suggested expanding Hebrew culture courses to broaden knowledge of Jewish culture among African Americans.
The report quotes Dr Hill predicting better race understanding would curb discrimination if people learned more about each other. It details the death of Mrs Josie Etta Fannin 70 of 1366 NW 68th Terrace after a long illness. An operator of Fannin's Employment Agency for years, she was active in St John Baptist Church and led the Woman's Home Mission Society, shaping community outreach.
Tallahassee reports show a sustained Negro boycott reducing City Transit Inc. revenue by 60 percent. Service will be suspended indefinitely at midnight June 30. Inter-civic Council, led by Rev. C K Steele, vows transportation for Black residents after shutdown, while negotiations with White and Negro groups fail over desegregated seating requirements. Henry Moore earns vice chairmanship at Hood College Jr. Red Cross Leadership Training Center, a rare honor for a Black student from Dade’s Northwestern High School. The Maryland center runs June 24 to July 1 and prepares leaders for Jr. Red Cross.
The illness of Mrs. Bessie Kerbo’s attorney delayed this week’s indefinite postponement of Miami's second bus segregation arrest. Mrs. Kerbo of 481 NW 10th St was arrested June 12 for refusing to move to the rear. Rudolph Reid, 19, a recent high school graduate, received a suspended $50 fine after a June 14 trial for the same charge. Neither was charged under state segregation laws. city disorderly conduct statutes were cited.
South Carolina State College announced that 15 students will not return next fall and that contracts of several faculty members were not renewed following an April student strike over segregation issues.
