City officials led by Mayor Mike Vargates and commissioners presided at a groundbreaking for a $60,000 pool at Teen Town, planned completion in 90 days, to serve the Negro area. A five member interracial committee was formed to oversee the project and remove exclusions.
Florida Normal and Industrial Memorial College received 25000 from Ford Foundation toward the endowment fund aimed at producing about 51000 yearly for faculty salaries. The grant supports the college’s program over the coming year. In a separate item, two young women died in a late Tuesday night auto crash east of Belle Glade on State Road 80. Identified were Eula Lee Holton, 17, and Daisy Bell, of 5927 SW 62nd St. in South Miami.
A Local 1260 member says garbage workers may walk out next week unless the city grants higher pay. City commissioners consider a compromise wage offer of 1.20 per hour while workers seek a 0.20 raise from the current 1.10. Budget includes a 0.05 raise and fringe benefits previously denied to Negro workers.
Three local politicians testified before a Chicago grand jury last week on income tax evasion in the policy game on the south side. County Commissioner Edward M. Sneed and two others were among eight persons called to testify.
Reverend Frank Thomas 55, pastor of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, was found guilty Tuesday of bigamy and fined 150 dollars or a year in jail. The trial, held in Fort Lauderdale, revealed Thomas had previously served time in a Georgia chain gang and had two prior wives, Ella Thomas and Ira Mae Horne. Testimony noted his Georgia jail meeting with Ella, his first wife.
A one day walkout by 600 striking plasterers ended after a 21 month contract boosted pay from 1.60 to 1.82 per hour. The stoppage affected 750 plasterers and 75 laborers and followed a dispute over work rules cited by union leaders.
A special panel discussion will be held Sunday July 8 on radio station WMBM during the Gospel Blind Boys program. Mrs Eliza Bethey will chair the panel.
Former state representatives Charles M. Skyles and Edward Welters stood before investigators as three policemen also testified to the investigating jurors.
Miamian Kirk Green of 1317 NW Second Avenue died Saturday afternoon at Jackson Memorial Hospital after an internal attack. He was rushed to the hospital and died shortly after arrival. Richardson Funeral Home held services Tuesday at noon in the Richardson Funeral Chapel with Rev. J. B. Blackwell officiating.
The partnership formed by Clyde Killens Bill Sawyer and Robert Barnett for the Fiesta Club at the Mary Elizabeth Hotel 642 NW Second Avenue has been dissolved effective June 23 this year. Announcements by Killens indicate the ending resulted from conditions during operation but occurred in friendly spirit. Killens said the Greater Miami Elks Club at NW 2nd Avenue and 11th Terrace will refer to a date to be announced and the entire club will be redecorated. A reliable source says the Fiesta Club will continue under different management.
In Charleston South Carolina three brothers aged 13 8 and 6 drowned while crabbing about 25 yards off shore near the Ashley River bridge on State highway 7. The bodies were recovered two and a half hours later as onlookers and the father Charles Smalls reported the incident.
An Atlanta home belonging to Mr and Mrs Carl Haynes was dynamited early Monday morning damaging the porch walls and two front rooms. The couple, a Negro family recently moved into a predominantly White area, avoided injury. Earlier in the year several houses in another White section were dynamited after being sold to Black residents.
