A nine year old African American girl delivered a 2% pound baby boy at University of Arkansas Medical Center in Little Rock on Wednesday. The infant, born about six weeks early, was placed in an incubator and had a reasonable chance to survive. Dr. Eva Dodge reported the birth certificate shows the girl was born in another state in March 1948. Dr. Willis E. Brown noted the mother is the youngest in his obstetrics department records.
Levittown Pennsylvania school authorities announced the hiring of two Negro teachers for local schools following protests that greeted the first Negro family’s arrival. Names will not be released until the start of the school year per policy.
The report notes Southern colleagues condemned Thurmond's filibuster and that a new bill seeks a compromise centered on a jury trial. The amendment concerns contempt cases tied to rights, with penalties outlined and debated in the chamber.
Washington amid a record-breaking filibuster Len Siron Durin g the long session the Senate passed a civil rights bill in a vote of 60 to 1. Florida senators Smathers Geer Hollan opposed the measure while Smathers had supported the bill earlier.
In Williamsburg Virginia Aug 29 31 state legislators from 16 Southern states convene for the Legislative Work Conference on Regional Education hosted by the Southern Regional Education Board. Gov LeRoy Collins of Florida chairs the opening session with Gov Thomas B Stanley welcoming delegates from Virginia and Gov Theodore McKeldin of Maryland set to speak at the final gathering.
The NAACP reviews a $225,000 federal contract awarded to the segregated University of Florida for nuclear research. Robert W. Saunders of Tampa, executive secretary of the Florida State Conference NAACP, asked national headquarters in Washington to examine the award, citing alleged restrictions on funds where segregation is enforced.
Roy Wilkins denounces rumors that the NAACP paid 18000 for William E Myers Levittown home and owns four houses to sell to Negroes. He says the group has no real estate or loan funds and is not in the housing market. The case prompted state police presence and a regional NAACP response offering aid if needed.
The U S Government has recognized the Military Junta now in power in Haiti. A State Department spokesman said recognition was extended to the Military Council after pending actions. Continued on page 4.
New York middleweight Sugar Ray Robinson secured a 255000 minimum guarantee from his Sept 23 Yankee Stadium bout with Basilio for closed circuit TV receipts. He had clashed with the International Boxing Club in August over theater TV rights, and he left for Greenwood Lake camp weighing 169 pounds as he prepared.
