Money Argument Over 50 Cents Ends in Slashing Death

Otto Thomas, 35, of Black Bottom Grove, told police Emnett Birdsong, 26, of 3788 Frowive, tried to borrow half of an one dollar when a fracas over 50 cents turned violent. Thomas admitted slashing Birdsong in the neck with a knife after Birdsong struck him. Birdsong was held by police. the fatal wound occurred last Saturday in front of 3430 Grand Ave.

Flagler Street to receive beauty treatment next week

Flagler Street, a principal Miami thoroughfare, will get a beautification and traffic engineering test. Portable flower beds with tropical shrubs and 14 foot coconut palms will line seven blocks from Biscayne Boulevard to the railroad tracks and extend three blocks along Miami Avenue. The installations will stay all week to assess traffic impact.

Three Kirkland brothers on Miami police force named

Three brothers on the Miami Police Department from Dothan Alabama in 1947 are highlighted as outstanding members. Patrolman R D Kirkland is nearing his rebationary year and lives with wife Florence and four children at 1239 NW 64th St. Pfc Earnest L Kirkland has five years service and is in the Air Force Reserve at Miami Air Depot, residing at 1850 NW 565th St with wife June and their three children. Kirkland third, a staff sergeant in the Air Force, lives at 1836 NW 66th St with wife Willie and their children Mae and five others.
