Center at NW 4th Ave to host a noon Monday newsboys contest with volunteers collecting funds for a hospital. Liberty Square edition of the News will be distributed from the hub and volunteers will pick up participants at the center.
Monday afternoon sale of special editions to aid the Children’s Hospital. Motto reads No child shall ever be turned from our doors. William W. leads the lion and Garth C. Reeves serves as district treasurer.
The first degree murder case of Sammie Lee Moore was recessed until Monday at 9 30 after juror Milton Fink sought leave to attend his father's funeral in Augusta Georgia. Another juror James L Pratt Jr was excused to be at the bedside.
The Moore trial in Liberty City opens with Noor Augustine Moore accused of killing his ex wife Mrs. Moore on March 28 1954 outside Brown's Famous Corner. A White jury hears pathologist Dr Maxwell Sayer testify two bullets were found in the body and Miss Pauline Banks testifies Moore dragged Mrs Moore to the car and beat her.
Six men received a combined 33 year sentence in Judge Ben Willard's Criminal Court for crimes from auto theft to attempted murder. Two Coconut men got 10 years each after riding with two University of Miami students and robbing watches and wallets. Oscar Thaxton, 26, and John Kimber, 22, were sentenced for the December 3 crime. The remaining convicts include Douglas Sinclair Sessions, 34, five years for stealing 150 dollars from an amusement company in 1949. James Blackshiel, 28, five years for assault with intent to commit murder in the stabbing of Edwin Curry on December 18.
Lakeland city commissioners decide to quit operating their municipal golf course and lease it from April 1 to Cleveland Heights Golf and Country Club to bar Negro players. Six Negroes’ federal suit proceeds in Tampa. judge notes no clear financial stake by city officials yet.
Robert Hubert, 35, of 3737 Day Avenue, received two years for attempted breaking and entering of a Food Fair store at 3195 Grand Avenue on March 6. Eugene Cutler, 32, of New York, was sentenced to one year for auto theft. He was arrested February 5 in West Palm Beach as a city meeting discussed leasing after comptroller L. Shuan said the city operation lost $50,000 over five years.
William Henry once labeled the Phantom Rapist by police pleaded guilty Tuesday to two burglary counts. Captured December 12, he faced nearly a dozen rape or attempted rape accusations, but witnesses failed to identify him. Henry has already pled guilty to two other burglary charges, with all charges except four counts of breaking and entering dropped. He faces sentencing April 12 before Judge Ben Willard, and is expected to receive five years on each count.
