A telegraph to Dr. Channing Tobias of the NAACP board expresses shock and grief at the death of Walter White, praising his fight for equality and urging continued efforts to end segregation and discrimination in America.
Dr J C Austin renowned Pilgrim Baptist Church pastor in Chicago and Mrs Austin honeymoon two weeks at the Miami Carver Hotel. The couple wed March 12 after a three year courtship. They will travel to Nassau or Havana with plans to return by April 1 as members of St John Baptist Church welcome them.
The eighth annual Florida State Business League convention will be in Ft. Lauderdale from March 30 to April 1 with the theme A Better Business Outlook Through Integration. The event features mayoral welcome, 1 p.m. registration at the new Y building, sessions and a banquet headlined by Dr. T. R. M. Howard of Mound Bayou Mississippi. For the first time a woman, Mrs. Mary Lewis Betsah, will speak at the Friday luncheon. Registration is 9.00 includes a Moonlight Boat Cruise two luncheon tickets and one banquet ticket. J. R. Taylor presides Roy Mizell hosts and Mrs. Gladys C. Vaught serves as secretary with headquarters at 1205 NW 6th street.
In New Orleans the National Council of Jewish Women pledges support for community drives to end segregation in Southern public schools. The group endorses a resolution urging immediate integration, while Louisiana upholds a constitutional amendment to preserve segregation by police power if needed.
The Medley Speedway hosts South's first all Colored stock car races this Saturday night March 26. Entries from across South Florida pour in as promoters and sponsors finalize a thrilling program for racing and entertainment. James Arthur Williams twenty year old Perrine youth was committed to the state mental hospital Thursday by Judge Ben C Willard on the basis of a physician s report holding him to be insane Williams had been charged in criminal court with second degree murder There was also a first degree murder charge pending against him in Circuit court in the gun deaths February 9 of Ernest Smith and Mrs Juanita Curry
Irene Roberts Straughter of Dade County School System was elected second vice president at the Florida State Teachers Association meeting held in Orlando. Straughter is a widely known educator for her statewide work in education.
The Supreme Court will begin hearing arguments on how and when states must carry out its May 17 ruling abolishing racial segregation in public schools. The session is expected to last a week with the Justice Department, 10 states, the District of Columbia, and five segregated schools involved.
Henry Goldston, 24, longtime Brownsville Florida Department Stores manager, failed to report for work last Monday and reportedly fled city with cash and merchandise valued above 400 dollars. Police also seek him for bad checks at Rose Auto Stores and for alleged personal disputes with several women.
In a Live Oak Florida case, $518000 in bonds tied to Ruby McCollum’s estate were turned over to T A Rowan, guardian of the McCollum property, after an unidentified friend surrendered them to Judge J M Hearn. Mrs McCollum, convicted of murder and adjudged insane, drew national attention in connection with the case. The McCollums were among Florida’s wealthiest families with Sam McCollum linked to the numbers racket. $85000 was found on him after his death near Ocala.
