Vandalia Farm Irrigates Corn With City Wastewater
In Vandalia Missouri since 1974 farmer Louis Kohl irrigates 240 acres of corn with treated effluent from the town lagoon. The arrangement reduces the city’s waste burden while boosting yields, though critics warn of odor, contamination risks, and public acceptance. Missouri DNR backs educational use and potential expansion, while EPA remains cautious. Kohl sees mutual benefit for farmer and city as water shortages grow.
