Bill stops taxes for abortions in Hyde amendment fallout
A federal judge in Brooklyn ordered the government to continue Medicaid payments for abortions for at least 20 days after a ban on federal funds except to save the life of the mother. Judge John F. Dooling issued a temporary restraining order affecting national operations. The Hyde amendment, part of a $56.6 billion appropriations bill, limits funds for abortions and prompted lawsuits by New York City Health and Hospitals Corp and the Center for Constitutional Rights. Presently federal covers 50 percent, state 25 percent, city 25 percent.
