Corn Grower Schutte Not Sure About Soil Tests
Missouri MFA contest winners Frank McQueen of Craig earned state champion with 186.44 bushels per acre, while second place went to Robert Schutte of Benton City. McQueen farms in Holt county near the Atchison line, with deep loess soil and terraced fields yielding 18,300 stalks per acre on May 4 plant date. He used V-16 corn, 18,300 stalks per acre, nitrogen 1380 pounds per acre, and practiced limited cultivation. He praised soil tests as a tool despite not fully trusting some recommendations. Schutte averaged over 174 bushels per acre on a flat prairie run, using no plow and shredding stalks with an offset disk. He planted May 17 in 30 inch rows, V-16 corn with 18,300 stalks, applying 30 pounds N, 70 pounds P, 100 pounds K per acre and side-dressing 120 pounds anhydrous ammonia later. He supports at least one cultivation.

Target Prices Set But Grain Likely To Top Them
Washington AP reports rising farming costs threaten ruin if grain prices fall to target levels under the 1973 act. USDA says 1974 cash prices for wheat and corn will exceed targets despite four year price guarantees. If crops surge, larger reserves may push prices down, though inflation and global markets complicate outlook.
