Irish Gunmen Begin Year With Murders in Republic and North
In Ireland 1973 opens with a double murder of a young Catholic couple in the Republic and an ambush near Belfast leaving one killed and two wounded. Separately a rocket strike on a Belfast police station wounded no one fatally. A farmer heard shots near the frontier. Brigid Porter 24 lay slain beside fiance Oliver Boyce 25. The couple had recent IRA expulsions amid suspicions of traitor killings, though the IRA denied it. The violence marks the 681st confirmed death in over three years of sectarian conflict.
