Fireworks Mark Bluebonnet Bowl Night in Houston

A crowd of 35,122 watched North Carolina State and Houston in a 31 31 tie after a dramatic second half in the 16th Astrodome Bluebonnet Bowl. NC State rallied from 31 17 down with 2:17 left, but a go ahead two point try failed and Stan Fritts sealed the tie with a late two point rush. Weakened by the tie, both teams lamented the result. In other notes, Kent State coach Don James was named Washington head coach, Detroit Lions signed Rick Forzano to a three year deal, and Central Michigan was voted No 1 in the final 1974 AP college division poll.
