Washington AP reports Congress sent two unemployment security bills toward broadening benefits. The measures would provide at least 52 weeks of benefits for 80 million workers and extend coverage to about 12 million new jobless, including farm workers, domestics, and state local government employees, with new emergency 13 weeks to 52 total weeks.
Governor Bond urges state to buy George Caleb Bingham sketches from Mercantile Library to keep the collection in Missouri. He cites loss of heritage if sold to outsiders and suggests a public subscription to meet the asking price, with display at City Art Museum and Nelson-Atkins Gallery noted.

London AP report says the Irish Republican Army began an 11 day Christmas cease-fire after a two hour bombing spree in London and Northern Ireland. Five blasts hit Belfast, three hit Lurgan, no casualties. Former Prime Minister Edward Heath was targeted but unharmed. The Provos planned a pause from midnight Sunday to Jan 2, with demands for troop withdrawal and amnesty. Heath described narrowly escaping injury on his rented London home balcony near Buckingham Palace.
Brandon restaurateur Larry DeThury plans free Christmas Eve meals for anyone spending the holiday alone. He will cook turkey or fish and provide company, asking volunteers to join in. He says the act is not for profit but to spare someone from loneliness on Christmas Eve.
Gold prices surged to a fresh peak on the Zurich bullion market after France announced plans to revalue its gold reserves. The metal opened at 188.25 and climbed to 192.25 an ounce by midday, surpassing the prior high of 192. London fixed at 192.25, up 4.75 from Friday, as dealers noted light trading and private speculative buying. The U.S. dollar remained firm, with the franc easing from 2.6 to 2.575 per dollar.
