Senior citizens organize to wield political power
America's 20 million citizens over 65 are forming a broad coalition led by the AFL-CIO backed National Council of Senior Citizens and the AARP. Growth in membership is rapid across groups, with advocacy for property tax relief, expanded food programs, transportation, health care and housing. The movement uses letters, protests, and lobbying, targeting legislators in states like Ohio California and Wisconsin, while noting seniors vote in strong numbers and can sway policy.
