A 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck at 4:31 a.m. shattering the San Fernando Valley. Dozens of buildings collapsed or burned, including the Northridge Fashion Center parking garage. Police officer Clarence Dean died. hundreds were injured as fires, power outages, and water shortages spread across Los Angeles, with federal aid and state militias mobilized.
Geology professor Christopher Sanders of Arizona State University explains that the Monday earthquake, registered at 6.6 on the Richter scale, confirms a suspected fault beneath the San Fernando Valley. He notes that pinpointing an exact epicenter is impossible and compares the quake to Armenia and Iran events in magnitude. He calls it a test of earthquake safety and awaits Monday’s damage assessment.
