Seismic Shifts Hit San Fernando Valley’s Image
The San Fernando Valley, epicenter of Monday’s quake, has shifted from a postwar boom suburb to a troubled middle age marked by high rises, traffic, gangs, and drugs. Since a 1971 quake killed 62, new industries and smaller businesses seek lower costs away from Los Angeles. The area now blends ranch houses with evolving urban trappings and a changing demographic mix including many Hispanic residents.
