Peer Mediation Expands Across District Schools
Fifth grade students from Matteson School District 162 Sauk and Indiana Schools gained Peer Mediation training to help resolve disputes at grades three through five. Implemented at Huth Middle School three years ago and introduced at Indiana last year, the program is now available at Sauk for trained mediators to aid in conflicts like name calling and rumor spreading. Principal Marda Cotton-Ramey says the approach helps children react well to peers intervening and builds responsibility. Psychologist Sue Mecozzi and social worker Tina Brookshaw led the training with Sauk and Indiana staff, with Sauk noting fifth grade training prepares for programs at Huth and the high school.
