Community campaign unites South Suburbs against crime

More than 700 residents gathered at the New Shining Light Church of God in Christ in Harvey for a drug and crime accountability meeting hosted by SSAC. Leaders urged God’s people to craft a peace strategy, with officials pledging to add juvenile judges, a community liaison, expanded probate and civil jurisdiction at Markham, and continued funding for the South Suburban Drug Initiative through 1998.

H F leaders say anti gang plan is working

Homewood Flossmoor High School officials say a gang task force formed last year has kept the problem under control with only a few hard core members and many at risk being identified. The plan includes higher awareness, reports of suspicious activity, locker searches, crisis procedures, and six subcommittees. A community leadership breakfast is planned to involve local leaders.

Matteson District hosts parent child institutes on Oct 27

Matteson School District 162 and Illinois Primary Center sponsor Parent-Child Institutes offering joint sessions 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Matteson Elementary. Activities cover family math, reading games, story time and book creation while parent programs address science, reading, home communication, inclusion and kindergarten readiness. Holm will discuss school funding. Arcadia Institute runs 7 to 8 p.m. at Arcadia School with workshops on reading strategies, math, self esteem and home communication plus vision and speech topics. Student sessions include science math activities singing Halloween stories and a theater group with an aerodynamics session.
