Gold coins surface in Salvation Army red kettles across Chicagoland

Since 1982 gold coins have appeared in Salvation Army red kettles from Krugerrands to Maple Leafs. Last year 75 gold coins were found in Chicagoland kettles including Crystal Lake Chicago Heights Lansing Matteson and Palos Heights. A Dominick's Chicago Heights kettle collected three coins a Krugerrand and two $50 pieces.

Rich Township 1999 levy to raise taxes slightly

The Rich Township High School District 227 board tentatively adopted a 1999 tax levy of about 28.5 million dollars, a 1.67 percent rise or 468,282 from last year. Homeowners will see a small levy increase as the district plans to set the final levy December 13.

Runners raise 4000 for Make-A-Wish at Drumstick Dash

About 772 runners and walkers participated in the seventh Drumstick Dash in Richton Park raising roughly 4000 for terminally ill children. The Midwest Regional 5K and Youth Mile drew participants from across the country and beyond, with some from Spain and the Bahamas, led by founder Dale Winterhoff and his wife Mary Ann. The event supports the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northern Illinois, honoring 14-year-old Rachel Reich who died in August after receiving a wish. Rachel’s mother finished third.

Catholic Charities wins senior housing grant in Country Club Hills

Catholic Charities of Chicago receives a 7 million federal grant to build a 71 unit senior housing center at St. Emeric Catholic Church in Country Club Hills. The project targets residents 55 and older within income guidelines and has local support from city officials and the plan commission.
