ATV injuries drop but youth riders still hit hard
A US Consumer Product Safety Commission study shows overall ATV injuries fell from 1985 to 1997 while child injuries remained about the same proportion. About 54 500 ATV injuries were treated in 1997 with 22 percent to the head and 65 percent of head injuries not wearing helmets. Drivers accounted for 85 percent of deaths. 14 percent were passengers. Nearly two thirds of drivers were male and helmet use stood at 32 percent among drivers.
